Flapper

8.25x5.25 mixed media in junk journal done yesterday. First a sketch of the imaginary 1920s woman was done in hard and willow charcoal followed by colored pencils, gouache, and watercolor. You can see some of the text of the old book I'm using for a journal. The term flapper originated in Great Britain, where there was a short fad among young women to wear rubber galoshes (an overshoe worn in the rain or snow) left open to flap when they walked. The name stuck, and throughout the United States and Europe flapper was the name given to liberated young women. COPYRIGHT 2021 Kay Smith
