15x11 watercolor and pastel of Dave, Lin's (of WetCanvas) kitty who
lives in the UK, courtesy photo. Included in the current weekend
drawing event participants have 2 hours to complete a painting with
furnished references, with challenges sometimes added. One of Lin's
challenges was to use mixed media so I added pastel accents hoping to
catch the disdain on Dave's face along with the haughty grandeur of a
tomcat. She had named him after her husband Dave.

White Roses
22x15 watercolor of some of my climbing roses planted in the front of the house. This is painted wet in wet on 140 lb Saunders cold press paper. I snapped
several photos when they were blooming at their peak then painted them. Not
happy with the mid section it was reworked and more negative leaves, stems, and
thorns added. My favorite part is the rosebud upper right. It was painted wet
in wet and colors allowed to mix and mingle. Daniel Smith paints used.

Red Mushroom
9.5x6.5 gouache and ink done last week as part of an online challenge; a red w/ white dots topped mushroom amidst falling golden autumn leaves. In this vignette on vintage dictionary paper I tried to focus the viewer's attention first on the colorful top then the brisk atmosphere of the season. Online description "Fly agaric mushrooms, or Amanita muscaria, are known for their distinctive appearance, being bright red with white spots, and for their hallucinogenic properties. They are usually dried and eaten, although they're not that common because of their unpleasant side effects."

English Woman
9x7 mixed media collage onto Canson watercolor paper done today as a demo for some of the Watercolor Horizons group in Odessa visiting Big Spring. Using black India ink, I sketched features using a wooden chopstick on an old dictionary and novel page; these had been done earlier with matte medium. When dry the paper was spritzed with fine mister. A paper napkin was separated and the yellow butterfly and flower were applied with matte medium. Lastly watercolor washes of Taylor's Flamingo Pink, Blue Bice, and Skip's Green (American Journey) were applied at random.
