Sweet Old Kitty

12x9 watercolor of another artist's cat, an elderly gal who is about 18-19 years old, same age as my old fellow Chuy.  She is lapping up the sun's rays while she can enjoy them.

Striking Gold (finch)

5.5x7.5 watercolor on Lanaquarelle 140 lb hot press paper sketched and painted last night of an imaginary goldfinch over an abstract background.  Hot press paper being so smooth allows for a softer, less hard edged look for this lovely yellow and gray feathered bird.

San Patricio Church and Cross

14.5x11 watercolor on Lanaquarelle 140 lb hot press paper done a few days ago from my photo of the oldest Catholic church in New Mexico.  In front of the building located in tiny San Patricio is a cemetery and the tall white cross was part of that.  Wild yellow orange flowers bloom randomly across its uninhabited front while an apple orchard exists south of the building.

Time for Sandhill Cranes

2.75x6.5 watercolor done yesterday, a close up of one sandhill crane photographed on their last migration flight through west Texas.  I like the long narrow format which is a repetition of the bird's elongated beak.

Carriage Horses

5.5x8 watercolor done from some horse photos I'd been planning on using but just hadn't.  These two were hitched together to pull their owner's carriage around the city.  Support used is Strathmore Visual Journal for watercolor and pigments are Winsor Newton travel kit.  I used a #1 rigger or script liner brush on the animals then a #6 round for background foliage and street shadows.

Autumn Air

4.5x5.5 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper begun on the first day of autumn two days ago.  In this imaginary scene most trees have shed their leaves.  Behind are fiery reds and oranges of foliage lighting up the landscape for the season change.  Even the rocks are glowing with natural color.

12x9 watercolor on Fluid 140 lb cold press paper done yesterday as part of another week's challenge on Facebook page All Animals Watercolor.  Ref courtesy Crias/WetCanvas.  This is such a beautiful and handsome dog and in order for his fur and markings to shine I placed a multicolored abstract background into the composition.

Brusho Sunflowers

11x15 Brusho/watercolor on Lanaquarelle 140 lb hot press paper begun yesterday then completed today.  These imaginary sunflowers were negatively painted with a 1" flat brush.  Brusho was applied first to a very wet blank sheet using Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Moss Green, and Gamboge, then plastic wrap put on top and let dry overnight.  That was removed and then blooms, petals, and leaves were painted around doing their edges until a composition emerged, so no pencil drawing and no reference used.  Burnt Sienna Brusho made very nice sunflower centers.

Big Fella Gorilla

6x7 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper of a gorilla named Big Fella in his enclosure.  Ref courtesy WetCanvas Watermedia challenge for this month.  It is my first time to ever paint a gorilla and was quite a struggle to paint the hairy ape.  A gorilla is also the next prompt for Facebook page Animals in Watercolor beginning on Sunday.  In the photo he appeared to be looking at his iPhone.

Politicians

22x15 watercolor on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper. Using only b&w photos I drew each fur-person carefully then painted wet on dry using imagination. On right hand side with orange background is a Siamese and that is Jezebel, studio kitty.
It was hard to find a sleezy name and many nouns such as Scalawags (too doggish), Jailbait, Devils in Fur Coats, came to mind but politicians seemed to fit perfectly. The cute phrase Cats are Just Tiny Women in Cheap Fur Coats is different, too. I love the one wet kitty on the left. I hope the cat lovers admire this one as it took awhile to do.
